About the Artist

Jewell Willhite, artist

I’ve been an artist off and on for most of my adult life.  Art for me started at Iowa State University, where I received a B.S. degree in Applied Art.  After graduating, I worked in advertising art for several years in Chicago before moving to Oklahoma and starting a family.  Wherever I have lived I have both painted on my own and also taken classes in art centers in Illinois, California, Oklahoma and Lawrence, KS, where I have lived for many years.

I usually paint in acrylics with a palette knife and prefer painting outdoors whenever possible.  I am a member of both the Lawrence and Topeka Art Guilds and exhibit in both of their galleries as well as in restaurants, libraries, Community Theatre and other local places in the Topeka and Lawrence area.

This blog will be about what an artist’s life is like because I don’t think many people really know what is involved in being an artist.  For instance art-related activities take up about as much time as actually making art.  I’ll talk about what these activities are.  I like painting in plein air (outdoors).   There are unique challenges to that kind of painting.  Then there are the expenses connected with art.  The prices on art seem high to the general public, but most artists have trouble breaking even, especially in this economy.

Most of the time I’ll write once a week about what the artist’s life has been like for me during that time and you may end up wondering why I do it.  As with most artists, art chose me, not the other way around, and I’m glad it did.

  2. Ford’s painting & the ensuing compilation is beautiful! Only two true artists could combine two mediums and two eyes for a memoriable result.

  7. Hi Jewell,

Apologies for the belated reply. I’m living in Dallas, TX now, but spent most of my adult life in Denver, CO. No marriages and no children – fortunately for them 🙂 I’m at gregpfox[at]gmail
